Can you make a copy of a key stamped do not duplicate
Can you make a copy of a key stamped do not duplicate? As a Locksmith West Palm Beach we receive many calls asking this question. Keys that are stamped do not copy or do not duplicate are usually done so for added security. So can a locksmith make a copy of one of these keys?
Contrary to what a lot of people believe making copies of keys that are marked “do not duplicate” or “do not copy” is not illegal. The only keys that are illegal to make copies of are keys that are part of a restricted or patented system, for example a post office box key or keys that are part of a master key system. All other keys that are marked are simply as a suggestion or request from the owner of the lock. So if it is not illegal than why is it so hard to get a copy of one of these keys made. Making a copy of one of these keys then comes at the discretion of the store or locksmith being asked to make the copy. Nine times out of ten a copy will not be made. But, you can find that locksmith whose ethics are questionable and will do just about anything to earn that quick buck. Usually those locksmiths are the ones that are running scams and you don’t want to do business with anyways. If you have a lock or locks with a key stamped do not duplicate it may be hard to find someone that will make a copy of the key. It may be better to replace the locks to prevent future frustrations of needing copies of that key replaced.
